Evening's growing shadows overtake Thousand Island Lake, as the lowering sun casts the last of the day's defining light on the deeply fissured and suncupped lake ice. There is evidence that bacteria and wind–born dust are responsible for differential melting patterns producing late season suncups. Banner Peak lords over this high alpine basin, obscuring the even loftier summit of Mt. Ritter.

Shadow Lake, After the Storm (Ansel Adams Wilderness) Shadow Lake, After the Storm

Juniper and pine lying in parallel repose, Shadow Lake is still alive with air bells caused by a violent pummeling of hail from a summer thunderstorm. I arrived at my shooting location midway during the storm, setting tripod partially astride the fallen watchmen. Stooped in rain suit and collapsing umbrella, it was another hunkering hour and a half of pelting ice before I was able to expose a negative. Later, I discovered Mammoth Lakes reported a record rainfall amount on that day.

Minarets, Lake Ediza (Ansel Adams Wilderness) Minarets, Lake Ediza

Nestled directly beneath the rugged Minarets, Lake Ediza has often been called the "brightest gem" of High Sierra lakes. Solid granite beaches up from the azure depths of the lake on its northern and western shores, while a profusion of wildflowers dot the meadowed margins.

Late Thaw, Garnet Lake (Ansel Adams Wilderness) Late Thaw, Garnet Lake

Although often mistaken for a mid–winter scene, it was actually nearly July when I was fortunate enough to experience the spectacle of tidal surges of ice on Garnet Lake. One minute, floes would disembark, revealing the dominating reflections of Mt. Ritter and Banner Peak, the next virtually crawling up the granite shoals of my camp.

A counterpoint of angular rock islands and pliantly thawing lake ice frames an unresolved dimensional reflection of Banner Peak at Thousand Island Lake.

Headwaters, San Joaquin River (Ansel Adams Wilderness) Headwaters, San Joaquin River

The  Ritter-Banner massif sits upon the headwaters of one of California's once great unbound rivers, the San Joaquin. Beginning its journey at the outlet of Thousand Island Lake, it drains the central Sierra watershed from Yosemite's Merced to the mighty Kings river systems. After cutting its way through the Sierra Crest immediately west of the Devil's Postpile, it is impounded many times for purposes of irrigation and hydroelectric on its way down the western slope, giving it the unfortunate moniker of California's most dammed river.

Clearing, Banner Peak (Ansel Adams Wilderness) Clearing, Banner Peak

Clouds dart in and out from the 12,936 foot summit of Banner Peak, its glacier glowing in the strong contrasts of afternoon sunlight. Photographing the igneous rock of the Ritter Range is especially challenging as its dark shades resist meaningful definition until side lit by the setting sun.

Do-Re-Me, 1-2-3... An irresistible composition of Banner Peak, its reflection, and 3 well placed stones as musical notes receding into the lake's inky horizon. Strong evening contrast highlights early season suncups banked along Island Pass Lake.

The slopes of Banner Peak, so dominant in their altitude, fight for mirrored presence in the water breaks of ice choked Thousand Island Lake.

Suncups dolloped upon the stilled waters of Thousand Island Lake offer a meringue like texture to stubborn late season ice.
