Shoreline, East Lake (High Sierra) Shoreline, East Lake

Perhaps rotting logs and lake water don't make a compelling composition alone, but something about this scene suggested a kind of horizontal rainbow of monochrome hues. It is these creamy tonalities that, previsualized and executed correctly, survive the transition from reality to the print, resulting in something extraordinary. See Lake Relection (2009) for the full story.

East Lake (High Sierra) East Lake

A placid lake cradled by 13,000 foot peaks, billowing cumulus fortresses guarding cobalt skies, all lit by soft enveloping evening light – nowhere else in the Sierra suggests the colloquial term of endearment, "Gentle Wilderness", better than this late summer scene of East Lake. See Making a Proof and Making a Fine Art Print for more information about this print, and Lake Relection (2009) for the full story.

East Creek (High Sierra) East Creek

Paralleling the trail to Lake Reflection, East Creek's twisting ribbon of liquid silver, decorated by wildflowers and choked by root and rock, cascades gracefully through its namesake canyon at late summer ebb. A deeply furrowed, sun–bleached juniper log adds an interesting dimension of texture, mimicking turbulent current and eddy as East Creek flows ever downward to its eventual rendezvous with Bubbs Creek. See Lake Relection (2009) for the full story.

East Canyon (High Sierra) East Canyon

Turning around, from my stance at the dwarf pine, I was treated to an amazing display of cloud interplay on the Vidette Spur, pooled water in the smooth fractures of rain-washed glacial polish and strong shadows at the Lake Reflection outlet. Always turn around before breaking down your camera and tripod! See Lake Relection (2009) for the full story.

Dwarf Pine, Lake Reflection (High Sierra) Dwarf Pine, Lake Reflection

The last raindrops of the night were holding a tenacious grip to the needles of this banzai-esque pine holding fort on the granite bound outlet of of the lake, as the brilliant morning sun finally burned through a day and a night's worth of gray. See Lake Relection (2009) for the full story.

Clearing Storm, Lake Reflection (High Sierra) Clearing Storm, Lake Reflection

Veiling clouds and high ledges interlaced with fresh snow greeted me after a night's steady rain at my camp on Lake Reflection. This is actually the forebay of one of the largest, and surely the most beautiful of High Sierra lakes. See Lake Reflection (2009) for the full story.

White Bark Ghosts, 60 Lake Basin (High Sierra) White Bark Ghosts, 60 Lake Basin

Like praying hands before a magisterial presence these White Bark Pine skeletons seek penance before a malevolent sky. I passed by this scene on at least three separate occasions before the right combination of earth and sky suggested a worthy photograph.

Palisades, Dusy Basin (High Sierra) Palisades, Dusy Basin

The interplay of light and shadow reveal the western slopes of the Palisades Crest. The clouded tops of Mounts Agassiz, Winchell, and North Palisade stand vigilant against the prevailing weather.
