Gates of the Valley, Spring (Sepia) (Yosemite) Gates of the Valley, Spring (Sepia)

I was on my way out of Yosemite Valley following a few days of shooting when this early spring scene at a much photographed site presented itself to me. Even though the tourist tram actually makes stops here to allow visitors to take pictures, light and weather conditions eventually conspired against me so that I could no longer resist committing this iconic view of the Valley to film. Although I had revisited the proof from time to time throughout the years, I withstood persistent urges to make a fine print of the negative, as I felt that it was too much of a tourist shot. That changed when I happened upon a photograph of the scene by a well known contemporary black and white photographer that convinced me to make a fine art print of my own. I now consider this to be one of my finest prints.

This is a unique, one-of-a-kind, sepia toned print

Eureka’s wave of dunes recede into a seemingly endless sea–horizon, bounded by the rogue wave of the Last Chance Mountains.

The only evidence of a lizard’s passage is its ephemeral tracks. Leading ever upward to the crest of a dune face, one ponders what it was seeking – prey, the dawn’s warming rays, or perhaps simply a better view.

Eureka Dunes #3 (Death Valley) Eureka Dunes #3

Morning’s shadow recedes from wind sculpted furrows at the isolated and remote Eureka Dunes district of Death Valley National Park. Reaching heights of 800 feet, Eureka Dunes are the tallest naturally occurring dunes in all of California.

Light and shadow meet along a defining line of demarcation as sloughing sand exceeds the natural angle of repose.
