Juniper and pine lying in parallel repose, Shadow Lake is still alive with air bells caused by a violent pummeling of hail from a summer thunderstorm. I arrived at my shooting location midway during the storm, setting tripod partially astride the fallen watchmen. Stooped in rain suit and collapsing umbrella, it was another hunkering hour and a half of pelting ice before I was able to expose a negative. Later, I discovered Mammoth Lakes reported a record rainfall amount on that day.
