Gates of the Valley, Spring (Sepia) (Yosemite) Gates of the Valley, Spring (Sepia)

I was on my way out of Yosemite Valley following a few days of shooting when this early spring scene at a much photographed site presented itself to me. Even though the tourist tram actually makes stops here to allow visitors to take pictures, light and weather conditions eventually conspired against me so that I could no longer resist committing this iconic view of the Valley to film. Although I had revisited the proof from time to time throughout the years, I withstood persistent urges to make a fine print of the negative, as I felt that it was too much of a tourist shot. That changed when I happened upon a photograph of the scene by a well known contemporary black and white photographer that convinced me to make a fine art print of my own. I now consider this to be one of my finest prints.

This is a unique, one-of-a-kind, sepia toned print

Reflection and Flow #1 (Yosemite) Reflection and Flow #1

A peaceful scene revealed itself to me early one spring morning as fog wafted lazily off the water and began burning off the mixed pine and oak forest along the Merced River. At the time, it was quite a satisfying experience to fall into the ground glass under the embrace of my view camera's darkcloth. The tranquil waters of the Merced seemingly disrupt and modify the resilient verticality of trees on its opposite shore. This panorama style (1:2) print is meant to be viewed along side Reflection and Flow #2.

Reflection and Flow #2 (Yosemite) Reflection and Flow #2

After shooting the companion panaorama (1:2) piece Reflection and Flow #1, I noticed tiny droplets from the previous night's rain oozing off a budding Dogwood branch. Reflection and Flow #2 manifests a subtle dimensionality through the juxtaposition between the lateral flow of the foreground branches and the vertical reflections of stalwart black oaks overlying the mirrored El Capitan monolith on the stream's opposite bank.

Treecicles, Badger Pass (Yosemite Winter) Treecicles, Badger Pass

Icicles drip tantalizingly from the branches of white firs along the Glacier Point Road near Badger Pass. In all my years of winter revelry in the Sierra, I had never encountered a display of ornamentation such as this. Very nearly every tree had been decorated as if by the invisible hand by some benevolent trickster.

New Snow, Oak Branch (Yosemite Winter) New Snow, Oak Branch

There is a kind of zen simplicity to the fractal venation of this dormant Black Oak branch. Accentuated by snow, it swaddles the huge boulder behind in mothering embrace. There is no direct light anywhere in the scene and it was snowing quite heavily at the time. For years, the empowering clarity of this print greeted me each time I exited the soft yellow glow of my darkroom.
